Sale Shopping Guide: Buys that take you to AW10

The SS10 season is drawing to a close, which can only mean two things – summer sales (woo hoo!) and brand spanking new season goodies (double woo hoo!).

Sales for Selfridges, Net-A-Porter, My-Wardrobe, Harvey Nichols, Matches, Jaeger, Banana Republic, Whistles, Dune and Warehouse (phew!) have now begun, with the rest of the high street following suit before July, so keep your eyes peeled!

If, however, you find lately your funds flow OUT far more than they do in, a bit of strategic sale shopping is in order. The siren call of the 50% off sign is difficult to resist, but look out for the following in the sales to ensure you’re guilt-free and ahead of the game come AW10...

1. Lace

Opt for black and charcoal, or deep colours that will translate as autumnal come September. Burberry Prorsum’s absolutely infallible AW10 collection heavily featured dresses and blouses in the fabric, worn over thigh-high boots (yes, you will be digging them back out!), along with THAT shearling flying jacket.

2. Leather

Leather clothing, summer’s surprise hit, is not going away anytime soon. Look out for shorts, dresses, t-shirts and vests in black or tan, as featured on the catwalks of Celine, Christopher Kane, Chloé and Bottega Veneta. Zara did some fabulous leather pieces, fingers crossed they go into the sale which begins on 24th June!

3. Trousers

Hareem, peg leg, skinny or tailored, anything goes for this season’s trouser – just ensure you own a pair! Avoid printed/patterned options and chose block colours in navy, sand or classic black.

4. Tailoring

This season, seek out tailoring with a twist à la Alexander Wang – cropped, fitted jackets and ultra-feminine cuts are ideal. Remember, shoulders are over (dahling!) so opt for a structured silhouette, not a Balmain-esque overstatement. Chloé offered a fresh take on the season, with tailoring in tan and beige referencing the easy chic style of the 70s – perfect for perking up an otherwise dark Autumn/Winter palette.

5. Maxi skirts and dresses

Avoid full blooms, but look for block colour and ditsy prints in tube skirts and maxi dresses, as seen at Erdem. Come AW10, you’ll be wearing yours layered with knitwear.

6. Structured bags

Whichever style you choose this season, be it ladylike or office-ready, make sure your arm candy is all grown up – avoid slouchy bags and look out for structure.

7. Small heels

One of SS10’s biggest shoe stories was, ironically, the smaller heel. AW10 sees more of the daintier kitten and mid-heeled shoe, so now is the time to invest – your feet will thank you for it! In the sales, chose ladylike, elegant styles as seen at Marc Jacobs to take you through to the new season – femininity is AW10’s calling card.

8. Statement necklaces

You may have gathered from the list so far, AW10 is not going to be a season of excess and OTT glamour. Sometimes, however, an outfit needs that extra something and what fills the need better than a gorgeous statement necklace, à la Lanvin? Opt for darker stones or burnished metallics to be on trend for autumn.
